In this first edition of our Curated series, we recommend upcoming performances, a stunning photo essay, a podcast episode for creatives, and a sociopolitical documentary for any readers looking for their next ways of engaging with and learning about the world.

Our Picks

Performance: Dreaming Zenzile at NYTW

This upcoming show based on the life of South African musical artist and activist Miriam Makeba seems poised to deliver a riveting portrait of her life. NYTW will hopefully announce the dates for this co-production with National Black Theatre soon. Learn more about the show here.

Photo Essay: “The Fading Ways of Indigenous Arctic Hunters” by Ben Taub, The New Yorker

This incredible photo essay published by The New Yorker documents and digs into the current realities facing indigenous hunters in Greenland. Ben Taub details the effects of the climate crisis on their environment, traditions, and culture alongside photographs taken by Ragnar Axelsson. Check it out here.

Podcast: Art Restart‘s “Evan Weissman” Interview

Art Restart looks at how creatives are reshaping and expanding their fields. We recommend this podcast for creatives curious about how fields are changing and creative leaders interested to hear from other pioneers. This interview with theater maker Evan Weissman is particularly interesting as he talks about Warm Cookies of the Revolution, a civic health club that participates in a lot of community engagement. Listen here or wherever you like to listen to podcasts.

Documentary: Netflix’s Reversing Roe

As abortion laws are at the focus of multiple, high-profile court cases across the country, including the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health case which the Supreme Court is expected to rule on soon, this documentary gives a strong look into the history of the fight over equality and bodily autonomy. Watch on Netflix.
