This past April, The Civilians hosted “Showing Up,” a night of music and monologues inspired by the words of NYC Black Lives Matter activists photographed by Accra Shepp. The night featured conversations with Accra, monologues taken directly from The Civilians’ interviews with the subjects of Accra’s photography, and songs composed from the same interviews. If you missed the show, or if you simply want to listen to the brilliant songs that came out of it again, you can find all of them below or on The Civilians’ Soundcloud.
“My Eyes,” with lyrics from an interview conducted by Marsha Stephanie Blake with Andrea, pictured above, is composed by Katie Madison and Jarrett Murray and performed by Katie Madison and Deborah Cowell.
“Breakthrough” is inspired by an interview conducted by Dee Harper with Jamel, her cousin, pictured above. The song is composed by Rashaan Carter, and performed by Anaïs Maviel and Rashaan Carter on bass.
“Got To See” is composed by Rebecca Hart (lyrics) and R&D Group Member Jacinth Greywoode, and performed by Jacinth on vocals and Andrew Lynch on guitar. The lyrics come from an interview conducted by Bailey Jordan Garcia with Louyi (on right).
“Community” is composed by R&D Group member Jaime Lozano. It is performed by Javier Ignacio, with Jamie Lozano on piano and mix by Demián Cantú.
